MLOG is a network of intelligent, water leak sound detecting sensors which monitor the entire water distribution system 365 days a year. Every night MLOG water leak detection sensors analyze sound patterns in their environment, detecting new, evolving, and preexisting water leaks automatically.
MLOG water leak detection sensors are maintenance-free. The units are rugged, waterproof, and battery-powered (10-year life). They are installed either indoors or outdoors on a water service pipe, usually near a water meter.
The MLOG Color map shows leakage at a glance, overlaying leak index from MLOGs over an area of the water distribution system. The color image indicates areas of low (blue) through high (red) leak index, using MLOG Color Map™ digital signal processing.
MLOG management software analyzes the data collected from MLOG sensors throughout the network. The software has many powerful features including:
- Automatic water leak detection and localization of water leaks registered by one or more MLOG sensors
- Integrated electronic water distribution system maps showing logger locations
- Analysis of neighborhoods, showing water leakage areas (MLOG Color Map)
- Intelligent analysis of the entire water distribution system
- Flexible reports for MLOG management, water leak investigation and pinpointing
- An expanding database of historical information, allowing tracking of assets, accounting for lost water, and guiding maintenance of the water pipeline network.

MLOG is a system of intelligent, wireless water leak sound detection sensors which detects water losses from the entire water distribution system every night. Each low-cost, battery-powered MLOG water leak sound detection sensor is permanently installed on a water service pipe near the water meter. MLOG water leak sound detection sensors analyze and save vibration patterns from every location in the water distribution system, using advanced digital signal processing to characterize water leak sound patterns in the pipes over time.
MLOG data can be transmitted from the water distribution system in two ways, either via:
- The utility’s automatic meter reading (AMR) system; or
- A hand-held or vehicle-based MLOG radio controller to read MLOG sensors in the field.
Managing Water Loss Using Acoustic Sensors and Advanced Wireless Communications With both the AMR and controller approaches to data collection, information from thousands of MLOG sensors is brought to the utility manager’s desktop every morning. The MLOG system can leverage the investment in AMR, often pay for itself within 2 years of a specified 15-year operating life, and provides an unprecedented amount of information about the integrity of the water distribution system.
MLOG is an enterprise solution to water leak detection throughout the entire water distribution system. It is the first economical and logistically sound approach to solving the problem of water loss between the treatment plant and the consumer, permanently reducing the production of non-revenue water.

ZCorr is a tool for acoustic surveying, detection, and pinpointing of water leaks in water distribution pipes. ZCorr loggers are typically deployed overnight in underground valve chambers. Up to 8 loggers are inserted into a ZCorr Docking Station, programmed, and subsequently deployed on the water distribution system during the workday. At elected times in a 24-hour period the loggers wake up and make high-resolution digital sound recordings, which are saved in the memory of the ZCorr logger. Recorded data is encoded intelligently by the logger before saving, taking advantage of any knowledge of the pipes, environment, or time of day of the recording. Intelligent power management is programmed into the computerized loggers to ensure a battery life of 10 years or 1,500 recordings (whichever comes first).
ALFA is a breakthrough signal processing method. ALFA scans the entire recording to learn about all the distinct sounds present: water leak noise, water flow sounds, traffic, hum from transformers etc. The water leak noise is continuously present and has an unpredictable frequency pattern which depends on the type of water leak, water pipe system, and connection of the sensor to the valve. ALFA focuses in on the water leak noise, removing transient sounds, such as a passing car, and other continuous sounds, such as usage or electrical interference. ALFA optimizes each individual water leak noise correlation for any water leak(s) present.

Fast & Accurate Water Leak Pinpointing
Two Field Sensor Units detect, record, and digitally transmit water leak noise present at remote water pipeline contact points. DigiCorr analysis automatically pinpoints any water leaks present.
Flexible Water Leak Sound Analysis
The DigiCorr is the only water leak noise correlator that lets you reanalyze any recording at any time in the field or in the office. You may change any data originally entered, such as water pipe and distance information, then re-correlate to update the water leak noise location.
Systematic Leak Surveying
The DigiCorr is the only correlator that can be used to perform a comprehensive survey of your entire water distribution network.
Flow Metrix integrates water distribution system maps (from paper copy, graphics files, GIS) directly into the user interface of the DigiCorr. Complete recordings are saved automatically into a survey database, together with associated map, pipe, and correlation information.
Powerful Water Pipeline Leakage Management Tools
- Advanced data analysis capabilities, including distinguishing
water usage from leakage, water leak source/type, multiple water pipe sections, and Smart Listening™
- Sophisticated digital mapping and database software to analyze and track leakage water distribution system-wide
- Management tools which enhance water distribution system maintenance. For example, analysis of water leakage by area, water pipe type, water pipe age, water pressure zone, etc.

Concept
Digital Correlation is a computerized acoustic technique developed by Flow Metrix, Inc. that can accurately pinpoint water pipeline leaks of all sizes. Vibration sensors are mounted nonintrusively on a water distribution or main pipe at long range up to a mile apart. Synchronized water pipe vibration recordings are analyzed in a 15-minute process using advanced digital signal processing techniques. Any water leaks present are detected and pinpointed with a typical error of less than 3 feet.
Applications
- Failed Hydrostatic Test:If the water main pipe loses pressure during hydrostatic pressure testing, the DigiCorr provides fast, nonintrusive pinpointing to locate the water leak at a fraction of the cost and time of traditional tracer methods.
- Direct Assessment:The DigiCorr can be used to survey a section of water pipe directly without taking the pipeline off-line and without exposing large sections of the water pipeline. The DigiCorr process is completely nonintrusive and can assess up to one mile of water pipeline in about 15 minutes.
- Emergency Location/Flow Assessment:The DigiCorr can quickly locate water leaks or other water pipeline anomalies that may develop in water pipelines during normal operations. The Correlation Display (see right) shows an example where the DigiCorr pinpointed the exact location of a pig lodged in a 4" carbon steel pipeline transporting liquid propane. The pig was instantly detected from over half a mile away.
Benefits
- Works on all sizes of pipe carrying any liquid or gas under pressure
- No disruption to normal operations
- Assesses up to one mile at a time
- Detects extremely small leaks

Unilog economically surveys a wide area of a water distribution system for water leakage. It rules out water leakage in most areas, allowing water leak pinpointing efforts to be concentrated in areas where water leaks are probable.
Unilog Deployment Guide
Spacing. Unilogs are usefully deployed at intervals of 250 feet to 2,500 feet. Shorter spacing implies higher sensitivity to water leaks sound.
Longer spacing implies increased predictive value and coverage. Spacing could also depend on expected water leakage density.
Deployment. There are two basic deployment strategies for Unilog: Long-term and Shortterm.
Environment / Types of Pipe. Unilog works on all types of pipe and in different environments (water transmission versus water distribution mains, urban and rural
zones) by adapting to the pipe sounds present. An inter-logger spacing of 250 feet or less is suggested for non-metallic pipe.
Leak Status Summary:
- No leak - L-T recording is on
- Possible leak - L-T recording is on
- Probable leak - L-T recording is on
- No leak - L-T recording is off
- Possible leak - L-T recording is off
- Probable leak - L-T recording is off
