American Water Emphasizes Importance Of Pipe Leak Detection And Repairing

9/26/2005
Company Shares Success at ICMA, Municipal Leaders To Benefit Across the Country

Minneapolis, MN — The American Society of Civil Engineers states that "...each day, six billion gallons of clean, treated drinking water disappears, mostly due to old, leaky pipes and mains … enough water to serve the population of a state the size of California."

These staggering statistics are the reason American Water is getting serious about detecting and repairing leaks much earlier than previously possible; thereby, reducing the potential of huge breaks that may cause major property and water damage. The Company will share their proven program related to Water Loss Management at the International City/County Management Association's (ICMA) 91st Annual Conference, taking place September 25-28, 2005 in Minneapolis/Hennepin County, Minnesota. The company will also highlight its latest Service Line Protection Program called LineSaver ™, specifically designed for the municipal market.

"It's important to American Water that we take every possible step to eliminate the loss of this precious resource, " said Wayne Morgan, vice president of American Water's Northeast Region. "Our goal is to promote water resource conservation and give American Water an affordable, round-the-clock means of detecting and repairing water leaks, " continued Morgan. The Company is utilizing the MLOG leak detection system to reduce operating expenses, decrease water wastage and increase water availability. The newly offered program is the first-of-its-kind that uses acoustic information from an automatic meter reading (AMR) system to detect and repair water leaks.

The Company noted that the program is currently being considered for implementation across the American Water system including pilot programs in Connellsville, PA and Irvington, NJ. Other projects being implemented are Uniontown, PA and Manville, NJ. While these projects utilize MLOG sensors, they do not use AMR technology.

In addition, the Company will highlight its newest offering, LineSaver ™. This program was designed to protect homeowners from unexpected high costs of service line repairs while generating revenue for the municipality with no additional investment and minimal labor requirements.

In most areas of the country, homeowners are unaware that they are personally responsible for the cost of maintaining and repairing water and sewer lines running from the street to their homes. LineSaver is a credible solution for service line repairs that are not the responsibility of the municipality's water department, nor covered by homeowners' insurance. This extra level of protection gives homeowners, as well as municipalities, peace of mind whenever a water emergency might occur? be it in the wee hours of the morning, on a weekend or holiday.

American Water has skilled professionals that will actively design, manage and implement the LineSaver program in a community. From establishing a local contractor network to educating homeowners about service line ownership and responsibility, American Water can customize the program to meet the needs of each individual community. Municipalities will recognize benefits ranging from the reduction of customer complaints and environmental stress associated with lost water; the generation of revenue from a new source; and stimulation of their economy by using local plumbers to complete repairs.
